The Never-Ending Battle with Dry Eyes

What a day! Today marked my fifth eye appointment in the last five months as my doctors continue trying to manage my severe dry eye issues. It has been a frustrating journey filled with trial and error, and today was no different.

Waiting for my test results

We started with drops multiple times a day, but that wasn’t enough. So, we added another drop—again, multiple times a day. When that still didn’t do the trick, the next step was a procedure to place silicone plugs in my tear ducts, all while continuing with one of the drops. But despite all of this, my latest test results showed my condition had actually gotten worse.

At today’s visit, my doctor laid out a few options, and we ultimately decided to remove the silicone plugs and try something called Lacrifill. This involves injecting a medicated gel-like substance into the tear ducts to block drainage and help retain moisture. And, as if that wasn’t enough, I’m back to using two different drops again.

I’m really hoping this new treatment works, but right now, I’m dealing with one of the side effects—tearing. My eyes are running down my face like I’m in the middle of a good cry. Let me tell you, having a syringe inserted into your eye while it’s open is not something I’d recommend to anyone!

I have to go back in six months for another injection, and I’m already dreading it. But if it means finally getting some relief, I guess I’ll push through. Fingers crossed this actually works!

They first had to give me a numbing drop so I wouldn’t feel all of it, but you still do 😦
